Timber Cruise: The measurement, usually made by statistical sampling, of quality and quantity of timber on a parcel of land. A detailed report will itemize each tree species by log grade, log sort and board foot volume of each. A good cruise will also address operational details such as timber type acreage, streams, terrain, road requirements and harvest system. The cruise estimate should fall within 10% of the actual cut-out volumes.
Timber Appraisal: The application of current log value to each species, grade and volume identified in the appraisal and deducting costs such as permitting, surveying and engineering, construction, logging, taxes, administration, replanting, profit and risk.
Merchandising: Cutting trees into logs so as to obtain the highest over-all value from the stand of timber.
Log Sorts: The various products obtained from the stand of timber. There are dozens of log sorts. Each mill, export yard and log buyer will have its own set of log sorts defined by specifications based on diameter, length, surface quality, interior defect, straightness and species just to name a few! Examples include Japan, China and Korea export sorts, peeler sorts, domestic saw log sorts, chip & saw sort and pulpwood/chip sort.
Log Grades: The standardized designation of quality and diameter recognized by log scaling bureaus and applied to logs delivered to a scaling point, usually a mill or export yard. Example log grades are #1 through #3 peeler, special mill, #1 through #5 sawmill and utility.
Scaling: Measuring the quantity and quality of a log by a standard set of rules, usually by a certified log scaler.
Units of Measurement
- Board Foot: A quantity of wood equal to a board measuring 1”x12”x12” or 144 cubic inches.
- Mbf: One thousand board feet. Approximately 1/3 to 1/4 of a log truck load.
- Acre: A area of land measuring 43,560 square feet, equivalent to 208.71’ x 208.71’ or a little less than the area of a football field.
- DBH: The diameter of a tree measured 4.5’ above ground level.
Slash: The tops, limbs and other organic debris remaining after harvesting the logs.
Riparian Buffer: The strip of trees left along streams as a habitat and water quality protection practice.
Anadromous Fish: Fish that live a portion of their life cycle in both freshwater and saltwater, such as salmon.
Forest Practices Application: The regulatory permit process, also called the FPA, by which the states control timber harvest.
